Here is a simple flower craft which is such a delight to make and produces a lovely 3D picture, which is colourful and tactile. After this craft being a huge success at our local toddler group, where the children enjoyed making this flower picture with wonderful results, I really wanted to share this with you.
This craft is ideal as a spring or summer craft when flowers are blooming and will encourage your child to think and talk about flowers. You will also find that the children will love filling up the cupcake cases with pom poms, so make sure you have plenty to hand!
It’s best to do this craft on A4 card so that it will be sturdy and hold the weight of the flowers. Ideally you would want some larger cupcake cases and some smaller to create certain effects, which we will go into later in this post.
*Please note that adult help and supervision will be required for this craft at all times, during the making and however the craft is used afterwards.*
So let’s get started, this is what you will need:

Materials:
- A4 coloured card
- Cupcake cases
- Pom Poms
- Pritt stick glue
- PVA glue
- Paint brush or glue spreader
- Green washable pen
To start, have your child choose their coloured A4 card. Using pritt stick glue, help your child glue on some cupcake cases. This will represent the petals of the flower.
You can keep the cupcake cases as they are or turn them inside out to have the stronger colours showing at the front. You can also layer the smaller cases inside of the bigger ones to create a fuller flower.

If you want a more natural flower-like effect, you can pinch the cases into the middle and release. Although I found for the younger children, they will just want to glue on the cupcake case as they are.

Next help your child add a generous amount of PVA glue into the cupcake cases, then have them choose some pom poms to put into their flowers to represent the middle. Your child will have fun filling these up!

You can then have your child draw a stem and leaf or draw this for them to complete the picture. Allow the PVA glue to dry and you will have a completed pretty 3D cupcake flower picture, wow!

During our local toddler group session, my three year old enjoyed making the first picture below and my two year old made the second one, with only a small amount of guidance from me. They are very proud of their flowers and because it’s such a tactile picture, they like to touch and talk about them.

It’s great fun for the children to fill the cupcake cases with pom poms, but for alternative ideas you could fill the cupcake holders with sequins, glitter, buttons… or they could be painted? Perhaps you could make the stem with a green pipe cleaners and have leaves cut out and ready to stick on?
We shall try these ideas next time… If you have any further ones to share with everyone do let us know in the comments below.
