Originally, I created this crown craft for our local toddler group to celebrate King Charles III’s coronation on 6th May 2023. It was simple to set up, the children and adults enjoyed making these together and all the children loved wearing their crowns afterwards. It was a successful craft to do for this age group.

Although this crown is perfect for a royal coronation, this versatile crown craft can be used for all sorts of occasions. Think prince and princess parties, kings and queens, fairy tale play, Christmas nativity scene with the three wise men, birthday parties, or just for fun! The possibilities are endless, just adapt this crown to suit your needs.

Note: This activity does require adult help and supervision, both while making the crown and during playtime afterwards.

So let’s get started, here are the materials and tools you will need:

Step 1. Download this free template here or make your own crown template:

Step 2. An adult will need to print and cut the template, then place over A4 card. Draw around the template with a pencil and then cut the card into two pieces.

Step 3. With your child, glue the two pieces together to get one long crown piece with a generous amount of Pritt Stick glue.

Step 4. Double check this will fit on your child’s head once glued together. You can always add on more pieces. Pick which side will be the front of your crown.

You can always skip on the glitter for this next section, if your short on time for a timed session for example.

Step 5 Optional: Have your child use a paint brush and dabble PVA glue (use Pritt Stick glue if you are short on time!) over the front side of the crown. Then have them sprinkle on the glitter. You don’t need to let it dry for the next step as the glue will help hold the stickers.

Step 6. Next have your child stick on the glitter foam shape stickers on the front of the crown randomly or in a pattern, however your child wants to. These will be your jewels!

Step 7. Add on anything else you would like to decorate with at this stage, such as pom poms.

It’s best to then let the crown dry before the next steps.

Step 8. Behind the crown in the recesses, help your child stick some square pieces of tissue paper with Pritt Stick glue.

Now it’s time to put the crown together!

Step 9. Test out the fit on your child’s head first. Once you know where the ends will meet, join the two ends together with a generous amount of Pritt Stick glue.

Hurray! You now have lovely royal crowns to wear and celebrate with.

You can make different variations of this crown by using pens, crayons or paint to decorate instead of glitter and glue. Or by using jewel stickers to decorate instead of glitter foam stickers.

I tested this out on my 23 month old toddler and he was able to dabble on the PVA glue and sprinkle on the glitter. It was great fun for him putting on the stickers too. This was a great activity for his fine motor skills and for learning colours and shapes. Here he is trying on his new crowns!
