King’s Coronation Royal Ribbon Windsock Craft How-To

Coronation Royal windsock craft

Are you looking for a windsock craft idea for a royal celebration? Whether you’re planning a street party, decorating your garden, or hosting a patriotic event, these DIY royal ribbon windsocks are the perfect festive touch.

We first made these windsocks to celebrate King Charles III’s coronation on 6th May 2023, hanging them from a tree at the top of our road for our coronation street party. They moved beautifully in the wind, adding colour, movement, and a royal flair to the day.

This easy craft is also a brilliant upcycling project as you’ll be recycling empty toilet roll tubes and turning them into charming celebration decorations. Perfect for coronations, the King’s birthday or any royal-themed event!

Note: This activity does require adult help and supervision, both while making the windsocks and however it is used afterwards.

How to make a royal ribbon windsock.

You will need:

  • A toilet roll holder
  • A4 coloured paper (blue, red, white, gold)
  • Ribbon 1cm width (blue, red, white, gold)
  • Hole-puncher
  • Safety scissors
  • Pritt Stick glue
  • Washable PVA glue
  • Brush for PVA glue
  • Black felt tip pen
  • Pencil
  • Ruler

Step 1. Firstly, you will need to cover your toilet roll holder with blue or red coloured paper. Use a pencil and ruler to mark the paper then cut it to size. Use Pritt Stick glue to attach the paper onto the toilet roll holder.

Step 2. Then use a hole punch to make holes on each side at the top. This is where the ribbon handle will be tied onto.

Step 3. Make your confetti style flags approximately sized at 2cm x 2.75cm out of the royal coloured paper. You can use a pencil and ruler for this if your prefer, although I have cut these freehand.

Step 4. Use a black felt tip to make a simple, no-fuss Union Jack on some of the confetti. Glue these onto the toilet roll holder in a random design.

Step 5. Cut a piece of 40cm ribbon in blue or red for the handle and tie through both holes like these.

Step 6. Then cut 12 pieces of ribbon at 40cm in length in 3 blue, 3 red, 3 white and 3 gold. Brush PVA glue on the inside rim of the toilet roll holder at the bottom. Place the 12 ribbons evenly spaced on the glue. Hang the windsock to let it dry.

*Tip* I found it easier to glue on half of the ribbons first and once dry, glue on the second lot of ribbons.

Hurray! You now have lovely ribbon windsocks for a royal celebration!

You could make many versions of this royal windsock by experimenting with the design on the toilet roll holder or changing the colours of the ribbon.

These would look lovey placed on a tree branch, pergola or on rope where they would catch the breeze. Even in slight wind the ribbons flow and catch the eye nicely!
